Sorry world, it’s going to take me a little bit to get over the amazingness that was Thursday’s St. Vincent show.
I guess at this point, I can count myself no different than the hoards of dudes who were praising at the Annie Clark altar that night. Webster Hall was filled with lovesick puppies of men, beaming at the very idea of being in her presence. Of course, I’m glossing over the crasser remarks the gents made (who says “bush” anymore?), including one in particularly that made me, the person who’s mouth is filthy enough to peel paint, blush. (Ask me for specifics and I’ll pretend not to want to repeat it but then will gladly and animatedly do so.)
In order to hold this little nugget of joy in my pocket, I’ve been listening to her NPR show on constant repeat, and am particularly enamored of her live arrangements of “Neutered Fruit” and “Marrow.” “Marrow” is one of my favorite songs, and I was really looking forward to this one part where she bends the end of the riff out — only to find at the show that she switches it up. There was a fleeting .5 second of sadness before being blown away by the incredible guitar solo that replaced it — a staccato assault that makes the song even more jarring and made me fall completely in love with Annie Clark and her Sideshow Bob hair and porcelain doll face. Ugh, the bros were right. She is the tops.
(“Marrow” stars at about 1:30:30 if you want to dive right in.)
